It's a matter of practice more than anything else. Get a sense for the fact that the dropship will thrust towards its own top, comparable but not identical to a helicopter. With thrusters cut, it'll glide in the direction you angle it.
The left stick will move your nose up/down and roll your ship left/right and the right stick will rotate the ship as if a pole were stuck through the ceiling and out the bottom and the ship was spinning in place.
I might need to do diagrams at some point.
Things to do to get used to the controls.
1: Thrust upwards in place and practice settling back down gently. 2: Thrust upwards in place and try to land in a different place by angling the ship without thrusting. 3: Thrust upwards in place, drop the nose of the ship and thrust again to go forwards. To land this, try turning around and thrusting back the way you came to slow yourself. Circling around to cancel your thrust is often a pretty good method for stopping. 4: To turn quickly, roll the ship onto its side, then pull back on the left stick before leveling the ship out. 5: Practice almost scraping the nose/tail on terrain/buildings and raise just the exact part of the ship that is about to collide to avoid damage (you will lose ships practicing this). 6: Always be prepared to go down in flames and abandon ship, hitting your dampeners. |

Also this. My steps are basically all you need in order not to total yourself on the ground in the first two seconds. After that, you're on your own, dodging missiles. I feel sorry for your wallet, it'll look like mine. |

Dropship Controls
Threw together a graphic (9000 hours in MS Paint) because new pilots will find this thread and I find a lot of them have trouble visualising what the effect of each movement will be.
Keep in mind that when your nose is facing the ground, the red circle is straight up and down, so relative to the ground, roll will cause you to spin in circles, if that makes sense. |
